British and Irish racing were rocked today by the news that Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell has died at the age of 34.

The jockey enjoyed his biggest moment in his career at Aintree in 2009 when partnering Mon Mone at 100/1 to victory for Venetia Williams in the famous race. He was also third on Monbeg Dude in 2015.

Other big-race successes for Treadwell included the Grand Sefton Handicap Chase at Aintree on Bennys Mist in 2015 and the Byrne Group Plate on Carrickboy at the Cheltenham Festival in 2013 both for Williams.

Treadwell rode nearly 300 winners, including many big race winnners for the yard, but decided to retire in February 2018.

A fall at Bangor in March 2016 had knocked him unconscious and was the main reason behind the decision to quit riding.

Treadwell returned to riding in 2019 and rode 10 winners during the 2019-20 season, all for Alastair Ralph.

Ralph said on Tuesday to the Racing Post: "We had a great season together. It's very sad. I have never met anybody who had a bad word to say about him."

Nick Rust on behalf of the BHA added his sympathies: "We are devasted to hear the tragic news about Liam Treadwell. Liam had a fine career in British racing riding over 300 winners in the 17 years that he held a jockeys' licence, none more so than his remarkable 100/1 Grand National success on Mom Mone in 2009 - a ride that cemented his place in racing folklore.

The racing community will be united in grief today, and the thoughts of everyone at the BHA are with Liam's friends, family and colleagues."

Many racing expressed sadness and posted tributes on Twitter

Very sad to hear about the passing of Liam Treadwell. Coming so soon after James Banks I think we need as a sport need to do more to look after those suffering from mental health illness. Thoughts to all those who knew Liam and it’s ok to be not ok. Folded hands

We both started off riding together on the flat. Such a kind, gentle character who wouldn’t ever say a bad word about anyone. Loved a party and always up for having fun, just wish we could all have done something more to realise how loved he was. Sleep tight mate
