SHOCK and disbelief were felt at the very tragic news emerging today of the sudden loss of one of the country's most talented and popular huntsmen, Ger Withers of the Duhallow.

A consummate professional, Ger had gone in to feed a stag yesterday at the hunt's kennels on his own but was attacked by the animal, tragically losing his life in the incident. When he did not return home to his young family as expected, a friend checked the kennels and raised the alarm. Married to Maria, the couple have three young children.

The entire hunting and farming communities have been devastated by Ger's untimely loss. From Liscarroll, he had been hunting his beloved pack of Old English hounds for 14 seasons and was so warmly and highly regarded by all who knew him. Only recently, he featured in the pages of The Irish Field for his skill as a huntsman and houndman.

Funeral Mass online

Chairman of Duhallow Hunt Club, Pat Fleming, thanked people for their support and reminded everyone that due to the current Level 5 lockdown, Ger's funeral is strictly private but can be followed by everyone online (see rip.ie for details).

"We urge all Ger’s hunting friends to please adhere to the current guidelines and restrictions.

If you would like to share a story (hunting or otherwise) or pass on your condolences, you can do so by texting or sending a WhatsApp message to 087-6364942 – all of these will be compiled and given to Ger’s family when the time is right. Thank you for your support during these awful times," said Fleming.

The Irish Field wishes to extend its sincere condolences to Ger's wife, children, extended family and many friends nationwide on their very sad loss.
