GROUP 2 winner Sumbal has been acquired by Boardsmill Stud, Trim, Co Meath from Annshoon Stud in Co Kilkenny.

Sumbal is a son of Danehill Dancer, he won the Group 2 Prix Greffulhe, was runner-up in the Group 2 Prix d’Harcourt, Group 3 Prix Exbury and Group 3 Prix du Prince d’Orange, and all of his wins plus two of his pattern placings came on ground that was heavy or very soft.

He achieved a Timeform rating of 117.

Boardsmill Stud’s John Flood commented: “Sumbal is a horse we have been following since his racing career and is an exciting addition to our roster. Just like the much-missed Jeremy, he is a Group 2 winner by Danehill Dancer and hails from a strong female line.

Group 1 performer

“His dam (Alix Road) is a Group 1 performer by leading broodmare sire Linamix (sire of Martaline) and she has produced three stakes horses to date.” Alix Road was a runner-up in the Group 2 Prix du Conseil de Paris, she is also the dam of the listed scorer Lily Passion (Sea The Stars) and the Group 2-placed Lavendar Lane (Shamardal).

“Physically, he is very impressive,” Flood continued. “He stands 16.2hh, has great bone and substance and lots of quality and presence. His first crop are yearlings in 2021 and from what we have seen and heard, they are very much in the same mould as their sire.”

Michael Shefflin of Annshoon Stud said: “I am very sorry to see Sumbal leave us. I believe he is a sire with a big future. He has a wonderful temperament, is very fertile and has all the credentials needed for a successful National Hunt sire. I have retained an interest in him and wish Boardsmill Stud all the best with him for the future.”
