THE first group contest of the Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket saw the Prix Morny runner-up Trident (Andre Fabre/Mickael Barzalona) expected to take the drop in grade in his stride, but he was never quite able to get on terms with all-the-way winner Modern Games (Charlie Appleby/William Buick), and the Godolphin colt stretched away up the final hill to seal an impressive victory by two and a half lengths.

The race was arguably marred to some degree by the fact that the six runners raced in three separate groups, although it’s hard to argue that there were any hard luck stories, with the first two racing together throughout.
