A TOTAL of 65 horses won a Group 1 race on the flat in Europe in 2019 – including a first by one trained in Hungary – and five others won top-level races on other continents for European-based trainers.

Blue Point, Enable, Iridessa, Magical, and Star Catcher won three apiece. Aidan O'Brien, one of six Irish trainers with at least one Group 1 victory during the year, struck with 11 different horses. Galileo was represented by 10 top-level winners, Pivotal's daughters supplied eight, and seven horses, including two classic stars, were the result of late-season coverings – all born in the month of May.

The racing career, pedigree and prospects of all 70 are examined in the newly published European Group 1 Winners of 2019.

In addition to those essays, the paperback, over 500 pages in length, also includes a number of indexes that organise the horses under categories such as by sire, grandsire, great-grandsire, dam, grandam, third dam, broodmare sire, breeder, owner, trainer, date of their earliest career win, their month of birth, and more.

It is the latest book by Dr Sieglinde McGee, who has been writing on racing and pedigrees for over 30 years, including the Pedigree Analysis column and sire reviews for The Irish Field for the past 20.

European Group 1 Winners of 2019 is currently only available on Amazon, priced £21.99, with an eBook edition due out soon.
