Michael Moore (Ballincurrig House Stud, consignor): No complaints, middle-market trade was up around 20%, I’d say. Highflyer had a huge order book and our point-to-point men were stocking up after perhaps failing to get what they wanted at the June sales. Kieran McManus was buying on behalf of his father (J.P.), to whom the industry owes a big debt of gratitude.

Michael Tallon (consignor): I was very pleased to sell all four horses I brought, especially one which I had bought for €15,000 at the Land Rover two months ago and sold this week for €30,000. I bought him because he was a very good mover who I felt just needed a bit of TLC and thankfully he improved out of all proportion. There was great interest in fillies too, I sold one for €14,000. The market is coming back up. I’ll be reinvesting at the foal sales and am meeting two new clients in England next week who want to get involved at the upper end.

William Flood (Boardsmill Stud, consignor): We sold all of ours. There were a lot of British buyers around this week, including some you would not normally see at this sale. I thought trade for the middle-of-the-road fillies was a bit weak. It may have been exacerbated by breeders pulling in fillies from the field after the June sales went so well, but there is still no market for incorrect, unsound mares with poor pedigrees.

Gerry Griffin (agent): The market was very strong. I bought nine horses, all for trainer Nicky Richards. We went a long way for the €80,000 sale-topper but ran out of kosh! There were a lot of new buyers around this week – some of them didn’t fill their orders at the Derby and Land Rover Sales.

Lucinda Russell (trainer): There was good value this week and I wished I had bought more. I was nervous about the horses in-training sale but the quality surprised me and I was very pleased to get Back To Bracka for €50,000. I also bought three fillies who I think will make good racemares. They all had good pedigrees and the prices were not crazy. Luckily we have owners who are buying two and three horses rather than one. The strength of sterling against the euro is also a help.

Denis Murphy (trainer): It was hard work but we landed a few and sare still on the lookout for more. A lot of horses have gone to England this week. There must be a scarcity over there because I heard four lorryloads of 14 horses left the sales complex for England on Wednesday night alone.
