This week I am writing this column from Aachen, or to give it its full title, the World Equestrian Festival CHIO Aachen. And that is what it really is - a festival of horse sport. With Nations Cups in five disciplines (show jumping, eventing, dressage, vaulting and driving), it is a truly unique show.

It’s been a few years since I have been here in Aachen but on seeing the arena again I was struck by a sense of awe. It’s not only the stadium itself that is impressive, it is the overall facilities and the organisation that have helped the show win the L’Annee Hippique best outdoor jumping event nine times.
