2.20 Racing Post Novice Chase (Grade 1) 2m 1f

Coeur Sublime: Former Triumph Hurdle second; now with his fourth trainer. Made a satisfactory start over fences when runner-up to Ferny Hollow at Punchestown but has work to do if he is to overturn that form. Decent horse at his best but may need one or two of these rivals to have an off day.

Ferny Hollow: Only managed the one run over hurdles last winter but couldn’t have been more impressive when beating the high-class Bob Olinger at Gowran. Absent until reappearing over fences at Punchestown earlier this month, where he made a winning chasing debut.

Will need to improve to win this stronger contest but looks an exciting horse who remains relatively unexposed at the highest level.

Gallant John Joe: Listed hurdle winner in his time but has been off the track 658 days. Likely to need this reappearance but even at that, he looked outclassed in this company.

Grand Bornand: Easy winner on his chasing debut at Galway in July but hasn’t been seen since then. Will almost certainly make a better chaser than hurdler but looks his stables second string here.

Zoffanien: Decent handicap hurdler last season but has been set a stiff task in this company. Failed to complete on his last two starts over fences, so a clear round will be the main objective.

A share of the prize money would almost certainly be a good result for connections.

Riviere D’Etel: Unbeaten in three starts over fences; as a four-year-old filly, she gets all the allowances here. Her slick jumping is a big plus against some inexperienced rivals and Jack Kennedy will almost certainly put them to the test from the outset. She takes on a better class of horse here than she has to date but looks well up to this standard.

Verdict

Riviere D’Etel won’t be an easy rival to beat as she has clearly improved since switching her attention to chasing this season.

However, Ferny Hollow remains an exciting prospect who could go right to the very top given an uninterrupted campaign this time round. He will need to jump better than on his first foray over fences but will have come on for that experience.
