DAUGHTER of the Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and a half-sister to four-time champion Beholder, Mendelssohn and Into Mischief, Clarkland Farm’s prize yearling filly sold for a record $8.2 million to Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm and was the unquestioned highlight of Book 1 of the Keeneland September Sale which concluded on Wednesday.

The price is a sale record for a filly and equals the fourth-highest price for a yearling sold at the auction. This year’s Book 1 covered three days compared to four in 2018. A total of 340 lots grossed $160,463,000, for an average of $471,950 and a median of $355,000. Twenty yearlings sold for seven figures, seven bringing final bids of $2 million or more.
