JOSEPH O’Brien is expected to have his first runners in his own name on Monday having been granted a training licence by the Turf Club yesterday. The 23-year-old former champion jockey has been overseeing a mixed yard at Piltown, Co Kilkenny, since retiring from race-riding last autumn but up to now the licence has been held by his father, Aidan.

Triumph Hurdle winner Ivanovich Gorbatov and Ascot-bound two-year-old Lundy are just two horses to have been under Joseph O’Brien’s care despite running in Aidan O’Brien’s name. From Monday punters will be in no doubt over which horses are trained by father or son.
