J. T. McNamara has passed away aged 41.

The jockey was left was left paralysed after a fall from Galaxy Rock in the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at Cheltenham on March 14th, 2013. The fall at Cheltenham fractured McNamara's C3 and C4 vertebrae.

JT was widely regarded as one of the best amateur jockeys the sport has known and a legend in the point-to-point world.

McNamara enjoyed Cheltenham success with Teaforthree in the Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Chase at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival. He won the same race in 2002 on Rith Dubh, was successful in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase with Spot Thedifference three years later and won the 2007 Foxhunter Chase on Drombeag.

JT was also one of the most popular men in the weighing room and his partnership with Enda Bolger was one of the most respected in cross-country chases.

He was champion point-to-point rider five times and brought his number of titles in the Western region to 10 with a fifth in a row in 2008.

The following season, he took the senior title and won that category every year, including in 2013. In all, he rode 602 winners between the flags. Only Derek O’Connor and Jamie Codd have passed him.

It is understood he suffered complications on Friday night before being transferred to University Hospital Limerick and then discharged to spend his final days with his family.

McNamara is survived by his wife Caroline three children, Dylan, Harry and Olivia.
