Two-star win for Derwin

FRANCIS Derwin Jnr won last Thursday’s 1.40m Table A at the two-star show in Vejer de la Frontera, Spain. Riding Jim Derwin’s Irish Sport Horse gelding Deep Pockets (OBOS Quality x Cruising), he was the fastest of 33 clear rounds in a class of 62 riders in 55.33 seconds, over three second faster than the runner-up, Tipperary’s Max Wachman aboard Ikaros who was clear in 56.73. Derwin also finished fifth with another ISH, AHG Whiterock Cruise Down, clear in 60.02.

Derwin and Deep Pockets than finished second in Saturday’s 1.40, behind Italy’s Giampiero Garofalo. Tom Wachman was sixth with HH Fireball. Max Wahcman finished best of the Irish in Sunday’s big three-star Grand Prix. Riding Coolmore Showjumping’s Dorette, he was unlucky to pick up a time fault in the first round to finish seventh. Victory went to Frenchman Cedric Hurel.

Rankin third in Italy

JENNY Rankin continued her good run of form in San Giovanni, Italy, when finishing third in Sunday’s two-star Grand Prix. Rankin rode Vanessa Mannix’s 10-year-old mare to one of eight double clear rounds, breaking the beam against the clock in 36.99 seconds. Victory went to Switzerland’s Jane Richard Philips with Bictorio Des Graz (0/0 35.32).

Rankin, who is based at Barry O’Connor’s yard in Malahide, finished second in Friday’s 1.40, with the 16-year-old mare Flower, owned by Mannix and Conor Swail, when clear in 54.93 seconds. That came off the back of a victory the previous week. She was also runner-up in last week’s 1.35m seven-year-old class with Justinov BB.

Coyle shares Puissance

DANIEL Coyle shared the spoils in the Puissance at the 63rd Annual Washington International Horse Show which was held at Tryon International Equestrian Centre in North Carolina. Riding Imar, Coyle shared the win with USA’s McLain Ward (Catoki) and Brazil’s Santiago Lambre (The Diamant Rose Z). They each earned $5,800.

German win for Howley

DIARMUID Howley won a one-star 1.40m at Neumünster, Germany, two weeks’ ago. From Co Sligo but based in Germany, he guided Manfred von Allwörden’s Be Aperle Va to the quickest of 15 clear rounds to claim victory.
