ALL the races lost to the weather this week will almost certainly be rescheduled in the coming weeks, according to Horse Racing Ireland.

On Friday HRI announced details of two replacement cards at Navan next Thursday and Leopardstown on Friday. A new date has also been found for Clonmel. However, with the cold snap set to continue into next week there is no guarantee that those tracks will be fit to race in time.

Clonmel last Thursday was the first jumps meeting to be cancelled as officials became aware of the severe weather forecast. This meeting has been moved to Tuesday, March 20th. Dundalk’s all-weather meeting on Friday was also called off, due to hazardous driving conditions.

Navan had been hopeful of racing on Saturday but heavy snowfall on Wednesday night put paid to that, while Leopardstown’s two-day meeting on Sunday and Monday met the same fate.

The Navan card has been slotted in for next Thursday, clashing with the existing Thurles meeting on the same day. Leopardstown has moved its Sunday card to next Friday afternoon and eight races are planned, to compensate for the loss of Monday’s meeting, which has been abandoned.

Shane Doyle of HRI said: “We have tentatively agreed new dates with all the affected racecourses and SIS, but we have to remain flexible and see what tracks can take racing and when.”

Thurles has a fighting chance of going ahead next Thursday. In an unusual move, entries are being taken until noon on Monday.

This week’s cancelled Dundalk meeting has been transferred in its entirety to next Friday night. The main race is the Listed Patton Stakes which was due to feature Kentucky Derby hope Mendelssohn. The original March 9th card at Dundalk has been moved to Monday, March 12th.

Four point-to-points were scheduled for this weekend but all have been cancelled.

Most of this week’s British turf meetings were cancelled. Saturday had been due to feature good cards at Kelso, Doncaster and Newbury but all were called off, as have Sunday’s jump cards at Sedgefield and Huntingdon.

All-weather cards at Lingfield, Chelmsford and Newcastle are scheduled for Saturday, and at Southwell on Sunday, but they are far from certain to go ahead.

Similar meetings in the UK on Thursday and Friday did not go ahead.
