IN the north west corner of KwaZulu Natal, where the mountainous Drakensberg range become rolling landscapes with rocky outcrops, lies a small piece of paradise. Oaklands Country Manor and Polo Club is a ‘home from home’ destination where the terriers and Great Danes claim the most comfortable sofas, the ponies find their own way into their stables at night and all creature comforts are catered for.

We had four wonderful days galloping over the veldt on beautifully schooled and well behaved polo ponies. The ponies are multi-purpose and are used for beginners learning to ride, polo beginners and polo experts. Or for riders wanting to head off with a groom to experience the exhilaration of being able to go for as far and wide as you want, under blue African skies, with high clouds and the most incredible views. Just beware the porcupine holes that seem to come thick and fast!
