PRIOR to foaling, routine farrier care for the mare is very important along with a dental check once a year, ideally in early summer after foaling and definitely before she becomes heavily pregnant in order to reduce stress on the mare and unborn foal.

I would vaccinate each mare for Equine Herpes Virus (EHV 1,4) at five, seven and nine months gestation and all the mares are given a flu and tetanus injection one month before their due dates.
