Trainer Andrew Balding says Here Comes When needs cut in the ground to produce his best. This is borne out by the horse’s form. He would have won three of the four times that he’s run on ground where the word ‘soft’ has featured in the official description if one photo finish against a subsequent listed winner had gone his way. His other loss with cut in the ground came at Epsom where he pulled hard and didn’t seem to handle the track. Balding suggested after the race that Here Comes When might next run in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. I imagine that plan is very much ground dependent as the ground is often very fast at Royal Ascot, as it was last year when Here Comes When finished 12th in the Jersey Stakes.
