IRISH Harness racing, which is relatively popular up to this day, owes a significant debt to New Zealand. The southern hemisphere country produced a stream of foundation mares which went to Britain, mainly via Prestatyn in the 1960s, and in turn many of the offspring made it to Portmarnock.
Thundering Hooves (dam of Sugar Baby and Thundering Knight) Smoke On (Smoke Away and Schell Smoke) and Lorneville, who gave us Sly Ville and the original Stoneriggs Banner, are just a few of these matriarchs.
