Laminitis has long been associated with overeating of grass and while too much grass is a risk factor for the disease, recent research has shown that nine out of 10 horses with laminitis have an underlying hormonal problem... either PPID (Cushing’s disease) or EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome).

In fact it was shown in experimental conditions that horses that did not have one or both of these underlying hormonal abnormalities were able to consume large amounts of grass without inducing a bout of laminitis.
