THE afternoon had begun with a tremendous finish to the Sky Bet Transfer Fund Stakes over a mile and a half. Gallant weight-carrier Salutation looked the winner under 10st minus Michael J M Murphy’s 3lb allowance when gaining a narrow advantage inside the final furlong but 12/1 chance Glenard and William Buick wore him down in the dying strides and got up by a neck. Dolphin Village and Pearl Castle came next.

Glenard ran by no means badly in the Chester Cup before Charlie Hills’ horses hit form. It was stamina which helped him gain the day here because he found plenty for Buick after racing prominently for most of the way.
