THE big race in Germany last Sunday unfolded in much the same way as events had panned out in the Group 1 contest at Rome half an hour earlier.

Leading fancy Earl Of Tinsdal spoiled his chances in the 12-furlong Group 2 Gerling-Preis at Cologne by racing freely and this allowed the seemingly exposed Guardini, who was coupled with Earl Of Tinsdal in the betting, to win by two lengths.
