ON one of the more dramatic evenings in Galway Festival history, a case of mistaken identity provided the focus of day two after it emerged that it was not the Jessica Harrington newcomer Alizarine but rather her year-older stablemate Aurora Princess who ‘won’ the Colm Quinn BMW Irish EBF Fillies Maiden.

An initial viewing of the race suggested that Alizarine had made a striking start to her career, but a problem emerged when a stewards’ enquiry into the result was called. Subsequently it emerged that ‘the Alizarine’ who took part in this maiden was in fact her 79-rated three-year-old stablemate Aurora Princess who had been due to run later on the card.
