THE 101st Saratoga Sale concluded on Tuesday evening with an electric session that established new records for gross, average and median for Fasig-Tipton’s flagship yearling sale.

“Rarely do you find me speechless,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “We are blown away by the results. The energy, the excitement, it just feels so good from an industry perspective. It’s not just for us. We’ve basically had two yearling sales so far this year and both of them have been really good. It gives breeders hope and encouragement. It was just a robust market.”

A colt by Gun Runner topped the final session and the sale when sold for $2,300,000 to White Birch Farm and M.V. Magnier. Offered by Gainesway, the colt is the second foal out of the Grade 1 winning Malibu Moon mare Heavenly Love, from the immediate family of Japanese Horse of the Year Zenno Rob Roy and Grade 1 winner Roamin Rachel.

A partnership of West Point Thoroughbreds, Woodford Racing and 3C Stable went to $2,000,000 to secure the sale’s top-priced filly, a daughter of Curlin offered by Stone Farm. Out of the Grade 3 winning A.P. Indy mare America, the filly is a full-sister to multiple graded stakes winner First Captain. West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing purchased First Captain with partners for $1,500,000 at the 2019 Saratoga Sale.

Eight other yearlings sold for seven figures during Tuesday’s history-making session. They included a filly by Quality Road out of Ithinkisawapudycat who was purchased for $1,800,000 by Donato Lanni.

The filly is a half-sister to five winners, including Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes winner Sweet Loretta. Earlier a colt by Curlin out of Angela Renee sold for $1,750,000 to bloodstock agent Mike Ryan.

He is the third foal out of Grade 1 winner Angela Renee, an own-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner To Honor.

Another colt by Gun Runner was purchased for $1,400,000 by M.V. Magnier. The chesnut is the first foal out the unraced Giant’s Causeway mare Flag Day from the immediate family of multiple Grade 1 winner Diversify. A son of Medaglia D’Oro out of Walk Close cost D Wayne Lukas $1,350,000, and the trainer was acting for John Bellinger. The son of a stakes-winning Tapit mare is a full-brother to the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Anneau D’Or. The colt was bred in partnership by Godolphin.

By the sire of Tiz The Law, a colt by Constitution out of Dothraki Sea sold for $1,250,000 to Mayberry Farm. This second foal is out of the winning Union Rags mare Dothraki Sea, a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Dixie Chatter.

The third dam is Eclipse champion two-year-old filly Phone Chatter. Stock by Into Mischief were popular on both days.

The daughter of Grade 1 Test Stakes winner Paola Queen was purchased for $1,200,000 by Kohki Maeda, and her full-brother topped the 2021 sale at $2,600,000. Paola Queen’s first foal won recently.

A quartet of seven-figure colts topped the first session of the two-day sale. It was led by a son of champion sire Uncle Mo, and he was knocked down at $1,500,000 to West Point and Woodford Racing, and L.E.B. The bay’s dam Secret Sigh is an unraced Tapit half-sister to Japanese multiple Group 1 winner and son of Frankel, Mozu Ascot.

Over the course of the two days, 143 yearlings sold for a sale-record $66,955,000, up 21% from last year. The final figure was 7% more than the previous record set in 2018. The average also set a new record of $468,217, up 15% on last year 14% up on the previous high set in 2019. The $375,000 median matched the record set last year.
