AT the Irish Pony Club Horse Trials Championships at Tattersalls in 2013 I was watching my son finish the intermediate cross-country.

To my surprise, the horse behind him was closing fast. On a loose rein, the rider was kicking and pushing for all they were worth down to the last three fences, as though they were riding down to the final fence in a steeplechase race.
