CORK’s Sian Coleman has been knocking at the door all month so it was good to see her win the EI 105 aboard Maurice Coleman’s six-year-old Kilroe Frolic. Dominating from the front, delivering one of only two fault-free rounds, the Sean Barron-bred son of Cavalier Land was sourced from the Monart sale, and was making just his second run under rules.

“He’s a good mover and a really good jumper, so we may do the show jumping age classes as well as event this year,” said Sian, who has accumulated a smart string of horses at her base in Mallow. Chasing throughout, Alice Copithorne and Fort Arthur Buddy filled second from French native Corentin Gautier riding the Chilli Morning-sired Chill Out. A strong show jumping track juggled the remainder, while leading rider Amanda Goldsbury, who looked well mounted with two horses, will be kicking herself for missing out fence 12 in the country on both.

Just two combinations made the cross-country time in the EI 100, but coming close and aided by a very smart flatwork mark, the winning honours went to Patrick Whelan aboard Julie Radden’s thoroughbred colt Galileo Dance. The good-looking son of Galileo, who is a half-brother to the three-time flat winner Dances With Stars, was the champion of the Stepping Stones series (thoroughbred sector) last year and has taken to his new sport like an old hand.

The CCI2* at Ballindenisk is next on the cards for the colt, who was sourced directly from his former trainer Joseph O’Brien. “He loved the bog today!” commented Radden. “His temperament is fabulous, and he is the kindest, easiest horse to do anything with.” Last season the bay stood at stud with Peader Murphy in Co Kilkenny for a few weeks, and having covered a limited number of mares, it is possible - eventing commitments allowing - he will return again.

Katherine Bennett impressively led the dressage with Lord Ghyvan, but with two poles on the floor in the show jumping, she settled for the second spot, from Whelan again with Dermish Chill.

Having had a day of mixed fortunes, Amanda Goldsbury finally got her head in front to win the EI 90 with Millhouse Platinum (breeding unrecorded). In just her second run under rules, the mare ran away with the dressage, and despite tipping a coloured pole, still maintained a clear lead over the Corentin Gautier (Gloria Morti MS).
