ESCOBAR, a two-year-old son of Famous Name, created quite an impression when he landed a maiden at Newbury last Friday, and in so doing became the first winner from the first crop of his sire who stands at the Irish National Stud.

Dermot Weld trained Famous Name throughout his long and distinguished racing career, and for good measure he was also responsible for the racing career of Escobar’s maternal grandsire Brief Truce. There is a further, though less obvious ‘Weld’ connection in that Pat Smullen’s wife Frances Crowley trained Escobar’s dam Saying Grace.
