I WAS delighted to hear from Ballykelly Stud’s John B O’Connor this week with a great story about a remarkable coincidence.
Firstly, he had news about a mare close to his heart. A couple of years ago John bred Ballinderry Moth (Yeats) at his stud near Cashel. She was named after his late father’s Oaks winning greyhound. The equine Ballinderry Moth won her bumper 10 lengths and was not beaten far by Samcro in a listed bumper at Navan. She only raced four times and was trained by John’s ‘neighbour’ Sam Curling. She has just produced a filly foal by Champs Elysees (Danehill) and been covered by French Navy (Shamardal). According to John, “I’m breeding to race the progeny myself, so I can be a little unconventional in the matings.”
