THE progressive Kastasa (5/2) made it three wins from four starts this season in the Irish EBF-sponsored fillies’ handicap over a mile and a half. Not for the first time it looked as though the 33/1 shot Effernock Fizz was going to pull off a shock from the front, but hard as she tried could not withstand the late flourish of the Andrew Slattery-ridden filly. The Aga Khan-owned three-year-old got up in the closing strides to score by three-parts of a length. A step up to a higher grade of handicap could now be on the cards for Dermot Weld’s charge.

Fridtjof Nansen, whose career began with a fourth to Saxon Warrior almost exactly two years previously, bagged the first success of his career in the TRM Calphormin Handicap over six furlongs. Colin Keane’s mount took charge over the last furlong of this 45-75 rated contest to win by a length and a half. The victorious 16/1 chance carries the colours of Francis O’Carroll and his success means that trainer Kieran Cotter has enjoyed the best flat season of his career with his 12 runners on the level this year producing five individual winners.
