Cruising has 1,289 Irish-born offspring. Amongst his overseas progeny is the Selle Français-registered Mic Mac Du Tillard who competed at World Cup and European championship level with Swedish rider Angelica Augustsson.
His approved sons in the ISH Studbook are: Bahrain Cruise, Beowulf, Cougar, Cruise On, Cruisings Mickey Finn, Flexible, Oldtown KC, Ringfort Cruise and Sailing. Another stallion son, Yeats, is Preliminary Approved.
The 1995 national show jumping championships in Salthill produced a particularly historic result as the winning mare Flex, ridden by Edward Doyle and runner-up Cruising, ridden by Trevor Coyle, were to later produce the 2012 World Cup champion, Flexible.
Cruising was the only sire to have top-10 progeny in both show jumping and eventing at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Flexible and Rich Fellers (USA) finished eighth while the Hong Kong Olympic veteran Mr Medicott and Karen O’Connor (USA) placed ninth.
Cruising has featured in the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses sire rankings since they were first published in 2008. He ranked third amongst eventing sires on four occasions (2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012); fourth in 2009, when he was also 30th in the show jumping sires table and fifth last year.
All three young horse championships at Dublin Horse Show are named after Cruising and his famous offspring, Flexible and Mo Chroi.
Cruising’s forelock plait, complete with green, white and gold beads, became his trademark. Another feature, seen in many of his grey offspring are the distinctive white patches which trace back to Mullacrew’s ancestor The Tetrarch, who was known as the “spotted wonder”.
Joanne Jarden, James Rooney and Vanda Stewart are now listed among the 21 FEI eventing officials worldwide who can judge at World Championships and Olympic Games
