Last to go in the jump-off, Coyle ensured he gained the maximum 10 points on offer by delivering a dazzling display of speed. Knowing exactly which route to take, the northern rider’s daring gallop to the final fence gained him valuable seconds when the clock stopped at 34.36 seconds.

“I actually didn’t think I was going to win it. Peter [Smyth] left it hard for me because he was so quick. There was a lot of pressure on, I really needed the points. The points are the important thing but I got greedy and wanted the win,” he said, speaking afterwards. “Uptown Girl is brilliant like that though, you can rely on her under pressure to jump a really good round.”
