NEXT week’s three-day mixed renewal at Cavan will mark the close of the national sport horse sales’ season. It has been an unquestionably good year for the venue, and connections will be hoping to finish on a high. On paper, the catalogue appears to be a good one, and opens with a strong collection of performance horses. Thursday action moves to the youngstock and mares, which, as usual, incorporates the Winter Foal Collection of youngsters with particular merit. Among the standout sires in the latter sector are Vivant Van de Heffinck, Sligo Candy Boy (who also heads Wednesday’s sires’ table) and HHS Cornet.

Finally, the Irish Draughts take centre stage on Friday, fielding a full catalogue of foals, mares and potential riding stock.

Ponies

Lot 6 Jessies Star, reg 11yo b m 127cms. One of 39 ponies catalogued, the diminutive Jessies Star is the winner of 123 SJI points. A regular in 70-90cms classes, she has also competed in cross-country, pony club and dressage.

Lot 17 Our Eddie, reg 6yo ro g 138cms. One from the intermediate height group, this experiences individual opened his SJI account in September of this year, and has since clocked up 18 SJI points. Described as easy to ride, he is showing great potential and, while still a little green, he is confidently jumping 80cm tracks and is ready to step up in class.

Lot 18 The Real Clover, reg 6yo ch g 138cms by Moores Clover out of Water Pebbles. Although only a six-year-old, this useful performer boasts a career total of 134 SJI points in classes up to 1.10m level. Very versatile, he has hunted with the Duhallow Foxhounds and schooled across country.

Lot 28 Lincoln Rowan, reg 5yo gr g 148cms by Murvey Ronan out of Ding Dong (Drimcong Cove). Probably the pick of the bigger ponies, this youngster has had a fully rounded education in most displines and, only for sale as his rider is outgrown, has won six SJI points.

Competition horses

Lot 42 Thornhill Highway, reg 13yo gr g 168cms by Lux Z out of Archerstown (unrecorded). This experienced schoolmaster has hunted, show jumped and evented under rules. He has carried an amateur and, recently returned to show jumping at the bigger level, has picked up 31 SJI points in classes up to and including 1.30m.

Lot 44 European Cruise, reg 11yo gr g 162cms by Cruising out of Hortensia De Litrange (Quel Hero de Muze). The leading horse in the Munster 1.10m and 1.20m league, this experienced gelding has a recorded total of 864 SJI points and is thought suitable to be a super fun horse for a competitive rider.

Lot 55 Toulouse IV, reg 9yo gr m 164cms by Tenor d’Arioso out of Stella (Syrius). A show jumper with form in Europe, this mare has since been ridden by underage riders both on the continent and in Ireland. Described as likely to suit a junior or an amateur.

Lot 58 Lisbane Top Gear, reg 8yo b g 164cms by Pacino out of Shannondale Fusion (Cavalier Royale). Another with notable show jumping mileage, this gelding has been jumping consistently at 1.20m level to win 61 SJI points. Well-schooled on the flat, and brave across country, he is one for a competitive rider.

Lot 76 Tullabeg George, 6yo b g by Dignified van’t Zorgvliet out of Tullabeg Hero (Cult Hero). This gelding is currently competing up to 1.20m level and is the winner of 83 SJI points. A great prospect for a young rider or an amateur, he enjoys cross-country and is easy to do.

Hunters

Lot 51 Buddy, reg 10yo ch g 168cms by Young Carrabawn out of Brehan Dancer (Crosstown Dancer). Having hunted with the South Union hounds for four seasons, this is an honest, genuine performer.

Lot 57 Charlie, reg 9yo br g 170cms by Cit Cat (dam by Cavalier Royale). Fully guaranteed as a quiet ride, this gelding is veteran of three seasons hunting.

Three-year-olds

Lot 114 Unnamed, reg 3yo b g 164cms by Sligo Candy Boy out of Aishling Grannus (Grannus). A well-related half-brother to Sligo Hard Times (Jose Bono Rodgriguez) by Balou du Rouet who is currently competing in classes up to 1.60m.

Lot 116 Unnamed, 3yo b f 168cms by Hiello out of Ballycapple Heather (Aldatus Z). The second progeny out of a smart mare that jumped to 1.40m level and clocked up 422 SJI points.

Lot 118 My Malbay’s Star Quality, reg 3yo b g 168cms by Lagan’s OBOS Quality out of Bleach Loche (Aldatus Z). With a pedigree going back to Cruising, this gelding is out of a full sister to Macushla R (1.60m), Lux Excel (1.40m) and the event horse HHS Foracruise (CCI3* and 1.30m).

Lot 119 Clogher Commander, reg 3yo ch g 170cms by Scrapman out of Clogher Silvana (Finns Clover Inn). A possible show prospect, this lightly campaigned Irish Draught was crowned the IPS in-hand horse champion at Necarne.

Lot 158 Cillbhrid Twink, reg 3yo b f 162cms by Andiamo Semilly out of Portroe Coevers Diamond (Coevers Diamond Boy). A half-sister to the UK-based event horse Arcadian Imp, while the dam is a full sibling to Sarahs Sparky (1.50m) and the international event horse Coevers Diamond Clover. Adding depth, the Lanaken campaigner Limestone Caesar is out of a full sister to the dam.

Youngstock

Lot 167 Kinmar Heather Ridge Hero, reg 2yo b g by Ganesh Hero Z out of Magician Hero (Athena Z). A half-brother to Damian Griffin’s Lanaken partner Kinmar Quality Hero.

Lot 184 Unnamed, b c f by Lucky Luck out of Olympic Pride (Olympic Lux). Out of a well-related sibling to the American-based I Spy (CCI4*). Dam is also a sister to the good broodmare Olympic Corner, dam of the four-star event horses Hi Tech (CCI4*), Call it Magic (CCI2*) and Baymax (CCI3*).

Winter foal collection

Lot 202 Ballyheerin Reverie, reg b f f by Esprit Van De Hoenderheide out of Quintina Z (Quinar). Second up in a sector of 47 foals of special note, this filly is a half-sister to Fanadwest Brave Heart (1.35m), ridden by Daniel Coyle. Boasting a very stout extended dam line, the dam is a sister to the American-ridden World Cup performer Jonkheer (1.60m) as well as to the Mexican-partnered Bariano (1.60m).

Lot 210 Unnamed, reg br f f by Lucarelli out of The Kings Lady (Kings Master). The sole traditionally bred foal, this well-related filly hails from a predominantly event-bred pedigree. He is by the Drumhowan Stud-based thoroughbred sire Lucarelli, while the dam is a sibling to three international event horses, the best of which is the Oliver Townend-ridden Ridre Dorcha (CCI5*). This is also a highly successful showing family, which features the Limerick Lady winner The Kings Mistress as a sister to the dam, as well as the former RDS young event horse winner Dance with a Stranger. Others in the direct maternal family include Hi Happy Harry (CCI4*), ridden for Ireland by Steven Smith, and the British-based CCI3* performer Ask The Boss (Jessica Mackie).

Lot 213 Corrindubh ZZ Pop, reg b f f by Classic Orange Z out of Catalina Z (Canabis Z). Carrying a full Zangersheide pedigree, and by a son of Cornet Obolensky, this filly is out of a sister to the Canadian-based Crusador Z (1.60m). The second dam, Sylvester (1.40m), is a sister to the Harry Marshall-partnered Audi’s Morning Star (1.60m) and several other notable jumpers.

Lot 217 Unnamed, reg ch c f by Tangelo Van de Zuuthoeve out of White Kannan (Kannan). One from a very stout homegrown family and a definite eyecatcher, this colt is a half-brother to Captain Marko (1.50m), ridden by Raphael Lee Jnr. Also to Lakeview Captain Kannan (1.35m) and the seven year-old Junior Kannan (1.30m). Further international winners appear further back in the pedigree.

Lot 218 Kamala Harris, reg br f f by Vittorio out of Elf (Diarado). Dam is a sibling to the Nations Cup performer G and C Sonny (1.60m), ridden by Rodrigo Pessoa/Werner Muff and several others. Featuring a very strong pedigree full of blacktype, the dam line also includes Wish (1.50m) and Pelvin Z (1.60m).

Lot 225 DPS Stella, reg gr f f by KMS Rooney out of Celerina (Cento). With an attractive dual-purpose pedigree, and by Kylemore Stud’s up and coming young sire KMS Rooney, this filly is very smartly bred. She is a half-sister to the American-based CCI5* event horse Pfun (Will Faudree) as well as to DPS Reverie (1.40m), ridden by Shane Goggins. Adding notable depth, the second dam Grischuna (1.55m) was a top-class mare with British rider Tracey Priest.

Irish Draughts

Lot 307 Hio His Lordship, ch c f by Gortfree Lake Shore out of Hio Lady Bountiful (Kiltealy Silver). The first progeny of a multiple winning broodmare, who was victorious in the ID young mare class at the RDS in 2019, and was reserve champion broodmare. The sire, meanwhile is a RDS performance class winner, as well as the winning RID working hunter.

Lot 309 Oakland Diamond, gr/ro f f by Hollypark Diamond out of Oakland International (Scrapman). A filly out of a class 1 mare, and by a similarly rated stallion, she was placed third in the All Ireland filly foal class.

Lot 310 Fuerty Supreme, reg ch f f by Moylough Supremacy out of Fuerty Failte (Welcome Flagmount). The dam was a useful competition mare who delivered clear rounds in each of her two appearances in the performance class at the RDS and was the winner of 26 SJI points. She has already bred Fuerty Failte Lad, who was placed reserve champion foal at the RID national show in 2018.

Lot 320 Unnamed, reg br f f by Offaly Clover out of Ballindrimna Lady (Donovan). This filly is out of a three-time national small mare champion, while her full sister Offaly Pride, won the National Show as a yearling and was champion three-year-old at Mullingar Equestrian Show earlier this year.
