IT is a fascinating Pertemps St Leger. It’s competitive and it’s open, and it brings together several strands whose respective relative strengths are, as yet, unknown. We will be a lot wiser at around 3.40pm today.

Pyledriver has followed a traditional strand: Derby, Great Voltigeur, St Leger, even if he did win the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot before he ran in the Derby. But he was good in winning the King Edward and, after a Derby blip, which plenty had this year, he was good again last time in the Great Voltigeur.
