IF Aidan O’Brien is to beat Bobby Frankel’s Group 1 record of 25 victories, the Dewhurst at Newmarket may be a highly significant race. That is the target for Seahenge, who left Goodwood form behind by winning the race before the St Leger, the Group 2 Howcroft Industrial Supplies Champagne Stakes over seven furlongs.
Things may not have turned out exactly as the Ballydoyle team expected, because Ryan Moore was aboard Mendelssohn, but the latter dropped out tamely as Seahenge, 8/1, held up by Donnacha O’Brien, came late to hit the front 75 yards out and beat the consistent Hey Gaman by a neck. Godolphin’s 9/4 favourite Mythical Magic, the same distance away in third, was a shade disappointing.
