THE £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes, a new race, started the ball rolling at Newmarket and Graham Gibbons hit the front on David Barron’s Poet’s Prize and held Receding Waves and Twin Sails by half a length and the same.

By Compton Place, Poet’s Prize seemed to appreciate the sixth furlong and was going away up the hill. Having contested middle of the road races in the north, he was earning part-owner Laurence O’Kane a handsome pot of just over £81,000, not bad on an initial outlay of 22,000 guineas.
