THE Doncaster St Leger meeting opened on Wednesday with the ground riding good to soft. The first day is fairly low key, despite the attention given to the ‘Legends’ race, but includes the Listed Scarbrough Stakes, won this year by Clive Cox’s three-year-old Priceless.

The decision to drop Priceless to five furlongs paid off in style as the 4/1 chance, held up just off the pace by Silvestre de Sousa, swooped in the final furlong to master the frustrating filly Thesme and score by three-parts of a length. The two-year-old Equimou, receiving lumps of weight, was only a short-head behind but the older horses further back have seen better days.
