CLEVER Cookie, the star performer in Peter Niven’s stable, delighted his many supporters by taking the Listed Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup at York on Saturday. The seven-year-old, previously successful in bumpers, handicap hurdles and, most recently, a Group 3 race at Chester, was carrying a 6lb penalty but still made it three wins on the Knavesmire and has earned his place in the Ascot Gold Cup field.

Clever Cookie was always travelling easily as Odeon made the early running. Red Galileo and Nabatean both had spells in front but, when P.J. McDonald brought the 9/4 favourite with his challenge, there was no doubt about the result. Easing clear in the final furlong, Clever Cookie beat Nabatean by just under three lengths with Angel Gabrial well held in third.
