GALWAY figures large in the story of the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Sovereign. The son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) won his maiden over a mile at two in the west of Ireland venue, emulating something his dam Devoted To You (Danehill Dancer) also did.

Furthermore, Sovereign’s full-brother Triplicate (Galileo) won at Galway and Killarney (where Derby winners Wings Of Eagle and Anthony Van Dyck won), while another own-brother, Cliffs Of Dooneen, won his first race at Bellewstown. It goes to show how competitive racing is at Ireland’s regional tracks.
