A NEWSPAPER of record is a major publication that has a large circulation and whose editorial and news-gathering functions are considered professional and typically authoritative. It is also the name of a two-year-old filly whose most recent success in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont has propelled her to be among the favourites for the Breeders’ Cup next month.

Newspaperofrecord is the 46th stakes winner and 24th group or graded stakes winner for her sire Lope De Vega who stands at Ballylinch Stud. She follows in the hoofprints of another daughter of the sire, Carla Temptress, who was a juvenile winner last year of the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes. The dual classic winner Lope De Vega, a son of Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway), had four Group 1 winners in his first crop, and now the progeny of his better books of mares are beginning to come through. Newspaperofrecord could be among the first of these to progress to the top-level.
