A DUAL champion racehorse and the sire of 25 Group 1 winners, Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) was euthanized at Kildangan Stud on Thursday as a result of health issues.

An eight-length winner on his debut, the Mark Johnston-trained colt beat the subsequent Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Wilko in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes on his way to defeating Oratorio in the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, making all the running to win by two and a half lengths. Named European champion juvenile, he was transferred to Godolphin, and the care of Saeed bin Suroor, at the end of the season.
