CAPTAIN Al may not be as well-known here as he is in South Africa, but there he has been one of the leading stallions for many years, especially noted for his two-year-olds. He died in 2017 after losing a battle with laminitis.

A son of Al Mufti (Roberto) who was group-placed in England, Germany and South Africa and was twice champion sire in the latter, Captain Al won nine races, three times at two, from five furlongs to a mile. At three he gained his biggest success in the Group 1 Cape Guineas over a mile and the following year dropped back to win a Group 2 over six furlongs.
