ANY disappointment that breeder Juliet Brown may have felt when her filly foal by Milan out of Golden Firth failed to sell at the Tattersalls Ireland November Sale recently may have been assuaged by the triumph last weekend of the foal’s close relation Golden Chieftain in the Southern National Chase at Fontwell.

This was the 10-year-old’s first win since he memorably landed the Grade 3 JLT Specialty Chase at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2013. I say memorable as he won the race at odds of 28/1 to provide my nephew Brendan with his first winner at the Festival and on the first occasion on which he sat on the gelding. Furthermore, he carried my money, and that of Goffs’ Joey Cullen, and all because I dreamt that my nephew rode a winner! So much for tipsters!
