MONTSARRAT was far from being the most expensive horse bought for Sheikh Mohammed by John Ferguson, but he has more than repaid the investment of 45,000gns made in him as a foal. Last week he won the Listed Derrinstown Stud-sponsored Jebel Ali Stakes for a second time, bringing his career total of wins to seven.

He comes from the first crop of the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Poet’s Voice (Dubawi) who sadly died on St Patrick’s Day in 2018 having covered just 25 mares. This was a blow as his popularity was on the rise again and since his death two Group 1 winners, Poet’s Word and Trap For Fools, have emerged to make his early demise all the more regrettable.
