About BHP Insurances: Founded in 1998, BHP is a privately owned Irish company. The firm provides insurance cover for many general lines of business such as motor, household, travel etc. BHP also services specialised markets by providing cover to charity organisations, community and social groups, festivals, events, entertainment venues, and sports organisations. BHP was appointed official insurance broker to the Federation of Irish Sport in 2012.

BHP Insurances expand into horse racing insurance market: BHP has begun an exciting expansion into the horse racing insurance market by launching their new insurance package for racehorse trainers. This insurance package has been developed specifically to cater for all the insurance requirements of racehorse trainers.

The racehorse trainer insurance package includes:

  • Turf Club Indemnity
  • Public and Employers Liability
  • Buildings insurance
  • Outbuildings & their contents
  • Goods in Custody and Control
  • Motor insurance
  • Personal Accident
  • and other covers
  • The benefits of the racehorse trainer insurance package:

  • Comprehensive cover
  • Competitive premiums
  • Dedicated service team
  • Streamlined administration
  • Louise Walsh

As part of BHP Insurance’s expansion strategy, Louise Walsh has joined the team and will be fronting the horse racing department. Louise started her new role as associate director in April.

Louise brings a wealth of equestrian experience and knowledge to the company. She has represented Ireland at multiple European show jumping championships at pony and young rider level, and also has a keen interest in horse racing.

Louise joined BHP from Leopardstown Racecourse, where she was involved in key projects, corporate hospitality, and race day operations. Her academic qualifications include a business studies degree and a Masters in retail management. Coming from a family business background and with the experience of previous roles, Louise harnesses a wealth of skills including commercial, operational, business analysis, and customer service. Louise’s equestrian background is advantageous in the understanding of customers’ equine insurance needs.

    Product and service offering

In relation to BHP Insurance’s product and service offering, research carried out by the firm has found most trainers tend to have multiple insurance policies, with different insurers, and all with varying renewal dates. BHP aims to collate the multiple insurance covers into one policy with one renewal date for the client. This would reduce time and costs associated with administering multiple policies and would simplify the renewal process. BHP is instigating their expansion into the horse racing insurance market by serving the racehorse trainer insurance market. However, BHP has the ability to provide insurance cover for other lines of business within the horse racing and equestrian markets.

    BHP supporting Irish racing

In order for BHP Insurances to illustrate its passion for horse racing and support of the industry, BHP commenced sponsoring the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown Racecourse in 2011. The BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle is a prestigious Grade 1 race which is run at Leopardstown Racecourse at the end of January. The prize fund for this race each year has been €110,000. The sponsorship deal is for five years, and BHP is keen to continue supporting the racehorse industry in Ireland.

    Winner alright

Since BHP Insurances commenced sponsorship in 2011, the race has been won each year by the remarkable Hurricane Fly, who is trained by Willie Mullins. Hurricane Fly was ridden by Paul Townend and Ruby Walsh to win the race. BHP is thrilled to be associated with the sponsorship of this race and having the opportunity of watching this legendary horse race.
