This filly by the late Luidam is the last foal to be bred out of the Renkum Englishman mare Sugar Cube who has now been retired by her Co Meath owner Miriam Cunning. The 1997 mare had 14 pregnancies which resulted in 12 live foals, the first of these being a pony who was jumped up to Grade A here by Kellie Allen before being sold to Belgium. The mare’s second foal was the 2002 Porsch mare Sugar Brown Babe who competed at four-star level with Sarah Ennis and represented Ireland at the 2013 European eventing championships in Malmo. In addition to eventing, Sugar Bob (2004 gelding by Porsch) was the supreme champion hunter at the RDS in 2012 and many of the mare’s progeny have proven successful in the show ring where they are exhibited by Valerie McCallister who returns them to Cunning at the end of their three-year-old season. Cunning is breeding from Sugar Sweet, has Sugar Bunnie competing with Ennis and will be getting Sugar Bess back from McCallister in September. All of these are mares by Porsch. The breeder has retained a half-share in Sugar Cube’s 2017 colt by Luidam and plans to hold on to this June filly, who is to be named Sugar Lulu, as a broodmare prospect.
