NOVICE polo players have begun to hit their stride following dual tournaments at Bishopland Polo Club in Co Kildare, contributing significantly to the outcome in tournaments for the Rits Perpetual Trophy and the Starters League mid-season blitz.

Launched with the new Irish Country Polo division at the start of the season, the Starters League provides structured polo in a tournament setting led by seasoned players for new and returning players with an entry level, -2 goal handicap to gain the skills required for the game. League founder Brian Thoma said that the three teams registered at the beginning of the season have been directed at their tournaments by one ‘Playmaker’, a term coined by the late Major Hugh Dawnay to describe one player who moves the game forward.
