CLASSIC Causeway heads the field for the $400,000 Grade 2 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby.

From the few horses in the final crop of Giant’s Causeway (Giant Game also represents that famed sire here), the Brian Lynch-trained colt comes off an easy win in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes and takes on 11 rivals.

Four of those that chased Classic Causeway in the Sam F. Davis, led by runner-up Shipsensational, take him on again.

The Tampa Bay Derby provides qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby on a 50-20-10-5 scale to its top four finishers.

Graded stakes winner Major General, the Grade 1-placed Giant Game and impressive maiden winners Happy Boy Rocket and Money Supply all chase Kentucky Derby points.

Classic Causeway and Irad Ortiz Jr are well drawn in stall four with a short run to the first of two turns.

In the Sam F. Davis, he led early and put away his rivals in the stretch to win by three and three-quarter lengths.

The victory was his second in four starts, following a first-time maiden win at Saratoga last summer. Between those two wins, he ran third and second in two graded contests.

Shipsational was slower away in the Sam F. Davis, coming from eighth to grab second having raced close to the early pace in his three victories from five starts.

Major General (Todd Pletcher) was a neck winner of the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs last season and won a maiden race at Saratoga in August.

Bill Mott’s Happy Boy Rocket goes into graded company after a maiden victory at Gulfstream Park in January.

Klaravich Stables’ Money Supply stretches out from a debut win at this track over six furlongs against maidens for Chad Brown.

Classic Causeway currently has 16 points on the qualifying ratings list followed by Major General in second place with 10.
