THE rise and fall of trainer Maria Borell took another turn for the worst when 43 horses were found abandoned on a farm in Mercer County, Kentucky. Borell’s father, Chuck, was arrested and charged with 43 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals and there is an outstanding warrant for the arrest of Borell, who reportedly owns some of the horses and was responsible for their welfare.

Borell burst on the scene last year with the emergence of top sprinter Runhappy, guiding him to five stakes wins including the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The day after that victory, Borell was fired by owner Jim McIngvale. Outrage and empathy over her unfair dismissal ensued. The sentiments haven’t changed, only the recipients.
