SITUATED on the outskirts of Ennis in Co Clare, the Gateau Stables is a family run business with a long association with the equestrian industry. The Gateau family specialise in producing, competing and selling quality jumping ponies from 128cm Under 10s, right up to European 148cm Ponies as well as Working Hunter and Showing Ponies.

Valerie Gateau, who runs Gateau Stables, is familiar with the industry and has built up an impressive clientele, both in Ireland and across Europe and America.

“There is a consistent strong demand for Irish ponies both here in Ireland and abroad. In recent times, it is very exciting to see the domestic market picking up tremendously. We are fortunate to have a good selection of ponies in our stables and we are always looking for future stars to invest in or jump and sell for owners,” added Valerie.

SJI SPONSORS

Valerie believes that it is important to get behind the industry in Ireland and as a result, Gateau Stables has become the Official SJI Sponsor of the Gateau Stables Young Pony Championships. Qualifiers for this league are being held around the country and the final will be held at the Mullingar National Pony Championships. This is the third year that Gateau Stables has teamed up with Showjumping Ireland. The league has been proved very successful, especially in the 148cm section and Gateau Stables wish all pony riders and their families every success in this exciting league.

PRODUCING & SELLING FOR BREEDERS AND OWNERS

Valerie and her talented son Jack Conlon Gateau (12) also train and compete ponies for owners and breeders.

“Typically, owners who have a good pony, ask us to train and put points up on a pony, with a view to selling that animal. We also have breeders who come to us asking us to prepare their pony for a particular show or series, such as the Millstreet International Horse Show Discovery or the Cavan Pony Sales,” she explained.

ACHIEVING RESULTS

2018 was a prolific year at Gateau Stables. Under the command of Jack Conlon Gateau, their 128 Welsh Pony Stallion Blaengwen Kato Star took 128 Reserve Champion at Dublin Horse Show Main Arena after winning on the second day in Simmonscourt. He also took 128 Leading Pony Title in the prestigious Coolmore Pony Premier Series. Jack was also Reserve 128 Leading Rider Champion. In addition, Gateau Stables also brought back gold and silver medals with U12s and U14s Irish teams abroad.
