TIPPERARY's Greg Broderick dominated the second leg of the TRM/Horseware New Heights Champions Series, with a one-two finish in the €10,000 feature class at Ballinasloe Showgrounds on Sunday.

The decisive victory came with Broderick setting an unbeatable target of clear in 35.54 seconds aboard Chinook II (pictured above), while he also finished in runner-up position with Charmeur, clocking another clear round in 37.18. Owned by Molly Tracy, the Verdi-sired Chinook II is a new mount to Broderick this season. Formerly campaigned by Anthony Condon up to 1.60m level, the 10-year-old gelding began the season with Tracy’s daughter Veronica on the Sunshine Tour at Vejer de la Frontera, before Broderick took up the reins at Cagnes-sur-Mer CSI3* last month.

Rio Olympian Broderick has already established a clear lead in the New Heights Champions Series, having triumphed in the opening round at Louth County with Pearl Biedron’s Charmeur.

Paul Duffy designed the course for the 30 starters which yielded nine combinations through to the timed decider. Only four of these would manage to keep a clean sheet on their second outing. Liam O’Meara came closest to Broderick’s time to make it a Tipperary one-two-three. Riding his own Coolcaum Hill-sired Mr Coolcaum, O’Meara stopped the clock at 38.80. O’Meara has seen an incredible run of form of late, having notched up four concurrent National Grand Prix victories.

Francis Connors supplied the only other double clear on the day with Stacey Babes and Mary Ann Papp’s nine-year-old mare Centolina RB, finishing clear in 45.07. Jenny Rankin, fresh from a successful tour in Oliva Nova, secured fifth position with Baccarat. Rankin made a bid for the time when recording 38.88 but incurred a single error. Darragh Ryan completed the top six with the Odermus R-sired Aerosmith, finishing with four faults in a time of 39.33. Ryan had ensured that Broderick’s Ballypatrick Stables had top billing all weekend having taken the top spot in the National Grand Prix with Zuidam on Saturday.

Mullingar Equestrian Centre will host the next round of the TRM/Horseware New Heights Champions Series at their 10th annual CSI 2* International Horse Show from Friday, June 2nd to Monday, June 5th.
