Tonkinese got the better of odds-on favourite Radiantly to land the three-runner www.gowranpark.ie Median Auction Race at Gowran Park.

Radiantly was sent off a 2-5 chance, as she was rated 9lb ahead of her main rival Tonkinese (2-1) and was receiving 5lb from Michael Halford's charge.

She also appeared to be travelling better than the pacesetting winner approaching the final furlong, but Tonkinese found more for Shane Foley's urgings to pull two and a quarter lengths clear at the line.

Halford said: "He's straightforward and you can let him bowl along. It was nice to find an opportunity like this and these races are good for horses that are not quite up to black-type level.

"A mile and a half was a bit too far the last day and I'd say a mile and a quarter is his ideal trip. He's kept busy leading Portage at home and he does a good job of that."

Another hot favourite was beaten when Butterflies caused a 16-1 upset in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden.

Decisive Intent made a bold bid from the front, but Emmett McNamara had that move covered a furlong out and Aidan O'Brien's filly stayed on well to score by a length, with even-money market leader Winter well back in third.

McNamara said: "The step to a mile suited as she was just taken out of her comfort zone over seven. I think she will get further and it will do her confidence good. It looked a deep race beforehand and Declan (McDonogh) kicked off the home bend and made it a true test. She's obviously very well-bred and is a valuable horse now."
