Mount Athos (by Montjeu) earned immediate post-race quotations of 14/1 for the Group 1 Melbourne Cup following his victory in the Group 3 Betfred "The Bonus King" Geoffrey Freer Stakes over 13f at Newbury this afternoon.
The Luca Cumani trained five-year-old was bred by David Magnier and Cobra Bloodstock. He is out of Ionian Sea (by Slip Anchor), and he is a half-brother to last month's Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Imperial Monarch (by Galileo). His siblings also include the classic placed The Great Gatsby (by Sadler's Wells), and the Group 1 placed duo Roman Empress (by Sadler's Wells) and Magritte (by Sadler's Wells).
Montjeu (by Sadler's Wells) stood at Coolmore Stud. He died earlier this year.
